If you want some more to look forward to, Guild Wars 2 promises (though how much delivery we'll get I'm not sure) to really shake up the definitions of MMORPG by creating a fairly unorthodox set of classes and world events.īetween Rift's open world and class system, TOR's voice acting, and hopefully GW2's (supposedly) revolutionary combat mechanics, I think we're looking at the beginnings of a real MMO revolution and the era of WoW's deathgrip loosening is beginning. Text Quest is shit for story telling because you get bored of READING the plot in a VIDEO game this isn't supposed to be a book, it's supposed to be an interactive movie! Voice Acting Quest is a LOT BETTER because people will PAY ATTENTION to the story instead of paying attention the loot the quest will give. That said, WoW was the first modern revolutionary MMO for its level of polish, and Rift I think is the next big step after WoW with a LOT of non-instanced open world open group content and a powerfully free-form class system, and TOR is another big step in that it has fully featured voice acting instead of playing Text Quest. The number of notable MMOs to come out in the last decade I could probably count on one hand as compared to FPS games or third person action games.
I imagine some of that, at least, stems from the incredible iteration cost of generating a new MMO. The MMORPG genre advances at the rate of glacial molasses running down a 3 degree incline in January. Despite that, however, an MMO with voice acting IS amazing. They promised an MMO with voice acting, not something "amazing".
